Route of drystone walls & orange trees
6 days / 5 nights
Walk 4 full days + 2 half days
Far from the tourist resort of Palma de Mallorca, the "Serra de Tramuntana" (mountains of the north) provides a succiession of wild, inspiring and romantic landscapes. A network of ancient footpaths, many of them stone-paved, reveals wonderful sceneries embracing coast, valley and mountain. Certainly the best synthesis of the western Mediterranean.
Morning: Welcoming at the airport or port of Palma. Short break for lunch and minibus transfer to the strat of the afternoon walk. A roman and medieval path traced across hills leads to the accommodation, the popular monastery of Lluc, set in quiet environment of olive groves. Dinner at nearby restaurant.
Start of walk from the monastery. After crossing an important "finca" and its herds of sheep, ramblers climb to Massanella, one of the highest peaks of the island, almost entirely visible from the top with its plain, bays, creeks and peaks. Walk back to the monastery for dinner & night.
Transfer to the banks of a quiet lake. The itinerary first crosses pastures and woods then detours to a panoramic viewpoint. The way down follows an historical pilgrim's path along the breathtaking gorges of Biniaraix. The final rail across orange and lemon groves leads to the town of Soller.
Dinner & Night at a local hotel.
Transfer with local bus to the rocky seaside. Gentle countryside, jagged peaks and limestone cliffs combine to create a haunting landscape. The path finally reaches dreamlike creeks and their clear cobalt water. Return by boat or taxi, depending on the weather, to Port de Soller, a lively coastal resort. Dinner & night at hotel.
Transfer to Valldemossa which once welcomed Chopin and George Sand. Short visit of the small town before taking the "Way of the Archduke", probably one of the most spectacular pathways of the island. From a bare plateau, the views over the coastline and the Mediterranean are gorgeous. Transfer back to Port de Soller or optional vertiginous walk down to the picturesque village of Deià.
Dinner & night.
Half day ramble around the village of Fornaltux to enjoy views over colourful orchards and admire the veauty restored stone-built houses.
Farewell lunch at restaurant and final transfer to airport or port of Palma de Mallorca.
